Not so fast, Gov. Bryant.
Yep, the Governor of Mississippi is proposing merit pay. For teachers. A state with one of the lowest levels of spending per student in the nation, whose teachers earn some of the lowest salaries of all teachers in the country, is proposing an unproven system of merit pay.
Some are not too pleased.
And a Vanderbilt study suggests merit pay may not be the best way to go, anyway.
Plus, this specific plan takes away step raises from some very poorly paid teachers and uses it to give a select few raises. How is that going to feel inside the school building?
Finally, a study researchers at the London School of Economics suggests that paying ALL teachers more yields significant benefits for students.
